Not every relationship is made to last forever, and sometimes the best thing for everyone involved is a divorce. If a couple is separated there are requirements that need to be met before they can become officially divorced.

If a couple agree to the terms of a divorce and there aren’t any major agreements with things such as asset division, child custody, etc. there are still requirements that need to be met. The State of Virginia requires a couple with children to live apart for at least a year before they can file for a divorce. A couple with no children must live apart for at least 6 months before they can file for divorce.

If a person is considering a divorce in Virginia, they may want to speak with a legal professional who has experience in divorce. An attorney can help their client with every step of the divorce process. They understand that every situation is unique and that there are many issues that a person can face depending on their circumstances. If children are part of the relationship, they can help with child custody and visitation, along with spousal support and child support arrangements. Military families can have additional issues that require experience with military pensions, international issues and security clearances.

Virginia residents who are considering a divorce may find that having an attorney on their side can be a good idea. An attorney has the experience necessary to protect their client’s legal rights and make sure they emerge from the divorce ready for a new start.
